Living with Heart Failure: Nellie’s Story


“When I say I have a new life and new heart, I mean it.”

My father died of a heart attack when he was 52. Like my father, my mother also suffered from heart disease. She had angina (chest pain) but was misdiagnosed. In 1989, she had a triple-bypass and died the next morning, a few hours after surgery. She was 62 years old.

It took nearly two years before I was “officially” told that I had congestive heart failure.  I too, had been misdiagnosed until I was nearly 40 years of age. Read the full story

Gail Wiggins is a busy woman, but she takes time for her health. With the demands of raising her teenage son and a high-stress job at the Department of Homeland Security, staying healthy and managing stress is a priority for Gail. She takes walks during her lunch break and meditates twice a week for 30 minutes.

The 46-year old single mom joined the Heart and Style Big Rewards program to lose weight. She is at risk for heart disease and is currently taking medication for high cholesterol. “My goal is to lose 30 pounds and get off Lipitor.”  Read the full story
