If you are looking for something a little different to do in the Chester area, especially now that the weather is worsening, then something that is interesting and thought provoking is a trip to the secret Nuclear Bunker – Hack Green in Nantwich.
This bunker was built during the 1950s, with the looming threat of nuclear attack under the shadow of the cold war, and at the time was something that very few people actually knew about. As well as being a bunker it was also part of the ROTOR project, designed to enable detection via radar of incoming enemy missiles.
It wasn’t built for sheltering civilians, but to enable the government to continue in the event of a nuclear strike on the UK – if you are wondering what that would look like, then make sure to watch the 1984 film Threads.
This enormous underground structure was designed to be blast proof to enable government and military officials to continue working for up to three months in the aftermath of a nuclear strike.
Nowadays of course it is no longer a secret – far from it in fact. It has now been converted to a fascinating and sometimes chilling museum that allows the public to see what might have been if things would have gone wrong during the cold war.
If you are visiting the area, it may be a good idea to find a pleasant place to stay like this Chester luxury hotel https://rowtonhallhotel.co.uk/ where you can forget about nuclear annihilation!
