Working a Sleepover Shift in Care Assistant Jobs

Sleepover shifts as part of your care assistant jobs work in a different way to a standard shift, so it’s good to know what to expect before your first sleepover.

What a Sleepover Shift Is

A sleepover is different to a waking night shift. Although you are sleeping at the client’s home overnight, the carer is expected to be available to assist the client if required. A waking night shift means you stay awake all night and assist the client with any needs they have.

What to Pack

Toiletries, phone charger, a change of clothes for the morning and any items that you require for your early start the next day. Pack the night before to ensure you are ready to go for an early start.

Your Duties During the Night

As with a normal shift, assist the client to bed and complete a brief check list prior to settling. Respond to client’s calls during the night and ensure that client is safe and secure at all times. Keep noise to a minimum and adhere to the client’s bedtime routines as detailed within their care plan. Handling an Emergency

If the client needs assistance then assist them as you would in any situation. If required, assist the client in accordance with their care plan and call the on-call number if necessary for further assistance.

Handover and Rest

Remember to record events that have occurred during your shift and inform the new care worker of any relevant information. Where possible attempt to get a reasonable amount of sleep in order to respond if required.

Sleepover Pay and Entitlements

Whilst the pay for sleepovers is generally lower than that for an active shift, you will be paid for any time that you are required to assist the client. Please check your contract and the applicable guidance on working time and rest entitlements for care workers.
